Toro Timecutter Hydro Problems

It can get difficult to understand how to fix some of the toro Timecutter hydro problems just by looking at the manual because the manual does not walk you through the technical terms and the whole process!

To make the mower engine more fuel-efficient, Toro Timecutter integrates hydraulic transmission. And the hydro system gives the Toro mowers unique features over traditional mowers.

But the transmission also makes the system susceptible to brake system failure, crankshaft issues, or an overheated engine.

So, we are here to let you know about the common timecutter hydrostatic problems and briefly break down the solutions for you.

Toro Timecutter Hydro Problems and Solutions

Toro timecutter series is quite different in terms of its transmission system. And that is what makes the difference. Its hydraulic transmission system makes it prone to some problems if not maintained properly.

So, let’s have a look at the 3majorhydro problems at a glance:

ProblemsCausesSolutions
Overheated EngineContaminated or low fluid levelChanging the fluid
Mower Tracks Right/LeftImproperly inflated tiresChanging the air pressure level
Parking Brake UnresponsiveBrakes or shift levers  are not set in neutralAdjusting the hex nuts and brake system

Unresponsive Brake

Most of the timecutter models do not usually face unresponsive brake systems. But having a hard time with the brake system is one of the most common toro timecutter ss5000 hydro problems.

The parking brake of the timecutter gets very difficult to handle and puts a stop to, especially on a slightly inclined area. It’s because ss5000 hydraulic systems are not made to do well on sloping lawns.

To fix the brake issues, you first turn off the engine so that there is no possibility of it starting accidentally.

  • Now you need to adjust the brake that is on the right side of the gearbox.
  • Then check if the brake and shift lever are set in neutral; if not, set them neutral.
  • After setting the lever level, take a wrench and turn the hex nut in a clockwise direction.
  • Now check if the rear wheels turn when you push the unit forward. If not, keep on turning the nut until the wheels move.
  • The next step is to release the brake. Then, push the unit until it rolls. You may need to turn the hex nut anticlockwise to make the unit roll.
  • After that, set the brake to neutral again. Then, push the unit to check whether the rear wheels turn or not.
  • Finally, you can release the parking brake if the wheels stay steady. This process will make the brake engage and responsive over slight inclines.

Turning Issues

Sometimes, the timecutter mower has less traction on the sloppy areas. And the mower tracks either too left or right. It does not seem to go straight.

It happens mostly because of air imbalance in the tires or if the control linkage goes out of adjustment. Also, if you overload the engine during heavy-duty work, the wheels struggle to go straight.

To fix turning issues, at first,

  • Look for the two bolts located on each side of the front mount seat. Turn them anticlockwise until your mower drives straight.
  • And repair or replace the linkage and keep the air pressure in the tires as suggested in the user manual.

In case you cannot understand how to balance the pressure level, it is better to leave it off to a professional.

The Engine Overheats

The engine will not be able to produce fuel-efficient performance if it operates hot. And the most probable causes of an overheated engine in the timecutter series are debris build-up, contaminated fluid, excessive loading, or low oil level in the crankcase.

You can take a rag to clean the debris off around the transmission. But make sure to turn off the engine and cool it down completely before cleaning.

Next, check the crankcase if the oil level seems low. Add oil until the ½ quart of the case is filled.

However, if you overfill, the engine might wear out quickly.

If the fluid seems burnt or contaminated, it is better to drain it completely. We suggest you not add any motor treatment to clean the oil; otherwise, it can cause more damage to the engine.

Rather, change the fluid. Must purge the air from the engine following the manual. This process will help to prevent oil contamination.

Crankshaft Doesn’t Start

A properly operated crankshaft is the key to sustainable engine performance.  But sometimes, the crankshaft struggles to start in the timecutter series. Mainly it happens when the electrical connections and control switches or levers are not in a good position.

To fix the issues, disengage the blade control switch. And then set the motion levers in the park position.

Besides, to operate the crankshaft properly, make sure the vehicle battery is charged properly, and the electrical connections are in good contact. If the crankshaft still does not start, the hydro system is probably failing. And you need to replace it.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Does a Toro Zero Turn Have Hydraulic Fluid?

Yes, they do. Most of the Toro tractors or mowers use hydrostatic transmission. And such a transmission system uses hydraulic fluid mechanics to produce and convey power to the mower drive train. Therefore Toro produces their hydraulic fluid that comes in both small and large containers. And they recommend using hydraulic fluid from any Mobil company.

How do you Change the Hydraulic Fluid on a Toro Timecutter?

At first, you need to place a large container under the drain plug that is located under the fluid reservoir. And unscrew the plug to drain the fluid completely. Now remove the hydraulic fluid filter and fill in the main filter with clean fluid. Then finish off the process by reinstalling the drain plug and starting the engine for 30 seconds to purge air from the fluid.

Is there a Difference between Hydraulic Oil and Hydraulic Fluid?

People often interchange the terms hydraulic fluid and hydraulic oil, but they are quite different. Hydraulic oil does not contain other fluids. However, hydraulic fluid sometimes contains different emulsions, salt solutions, and water. Unlike the fluid, hydraulic oil cannot operate under high temperatures and pressure as it is highly flammable.

Conclusion

Diagnosing most of the toro timecutter hydro problems is not a difficult job. Most often, it is the hydraulic fluid that causes the issues. And therefore, if you face any issue with your timecutter model, at first check whether the fluid is an adequate level and filtration or not.

Filtering the fluid and keeping the pressure release valves in the drive position should fix some of the basic hydraulic problems. Also, routine maintenance, such as checking whether the internal parts are properly installed, cleaning around the transmission, purging can prevent these toro timecutter hydro problems.

The manual offers some solutions so that you can find some issues on your own. However, we recommend you to take the help of a service dealer while needed.
